Before you decorate those eggs….
Hi everyone! Wishing you all a joyous Passover and a joyous Easter.
I know many of you, myself included, will be coloring Easter eggs with the kids this week. While it is very easy and convenient to use artificial food coloring (like the little pellets in the egg decorating kits), it is also easy to use natural dyes… and it is a lot healthier.
Many people see artificial food coloring as harmless.
After all, why would they allow it in food if it were dangerous?
This is a question I have a hard time answering myself since artificial food coloring and dyes can be found in just about everything! Truth is, nicely colored food sells better and natural dyes are more expensive. What would you think about a maraschino cherry that wasn’t bright red? Unfortunately, looks are deceiving. Here are just a few bits of information on artificial food coloring:
# There are 7 artificial colors that are currently approved to be used in the US. These are: Blue #1, Blue # 2, Green #3, Red #40, Red #3, Yellow #5, and Yellow #6.
# Europe uses less artificial food colors than are permitted for use in the US.
# Several research studies have shown a link between artificial food coloring and child behavior issues (read more here)
# Studies have shown links between artificial colors and asthma, rashes, and even tumors.
# Children’s growing and developing bodies are more susceptible to the toxicity of artificial colorings
# Artificial food colorings are made from petroleum, acetone, and coal tar
# Artificial food colorings cannot only be found in junk food and candy, but they are even used to make things like salmon and oranges look more appealing
OK, I could probably go on and on with the list but, I think you get the point. The key is, we really want to avoid artificial colorings as much as we possible can. They are just not worth consuming.
So, now for egg decorating! Yes, you can dye your Easter eggs naturally!
1. Use a mug or large glass for each color you wish to make.
2. Place the colorant into each mug
* Brown: 2 teabags or several tablespoons of coffee grinds
* Red: several tablespoons of paprika
* Pink: piece of a beet or 2 berry teabags or mashed frozen raspberries or red fruit juice
* Purple: fill cup 1/3 with grape juice
* Yellow: several tablespoons of turmeric
* Orange: yellow onion skins
* Blue: red cabbage leaves or frozen blueberries (mash a bit in mug)
* Green: spinach (mash a bit in mug)
3. Add 1 teaspoon of white vinegar to each mug
4. Add ~ 1/2 cup of boiling water to each mug and mix
5. Dip eggs in solution. Remember, the longer the egg remains in the solution, the darker your colors will be.
6. Allow your eggs to dry.
7. If you wish for a shiny coating, you can rub with a little bit of olive or vegetable oil
Send me some pictures of your beautiful eggs!!
