Before you decorate those eggs….

From Danielle Zanzarov, http://www.4HealthInc.com

Before you decorate those eggs….

Hi everyone! Wishing you all a joyous Passover and a joyous Easter.

I know many of you, myself included, will be coloring Easter eggs with the kids this week. While it is very easy and convenient to use artificial food coloring (like the little pellets in the egg decorating kits), it is also easy to use natural dyes… and it is a lot healthier.

Many people see artificial food coloring as harmless.

After all, why would they allow it in food if it were dangerous?

This is a question I have a hard time answering myself since artificial food coloring and dyes can be found in just about everything! Truth is, nicely colored food sells better and natural dyes are more expensive. What would you think about a maraschino cherry that wasn’t bright red? Unfortunately, looks are deceiving. Here are just a few bits of information on artificial food coloring:

# There are 7 artificial colors that are currently approved to be used in the US. These are: Blue #1, Blue # 2, Green #3, Red #40, Red #3, Yellow #5, and Yellow #6.
# Europe uses less artificial food colors than are permitted for use in the US.
# Several research studies have shown a link between artificial food coloring and child behavior issues (read more here)
# Studies have shown links between artificial colors and asthma, rashes, and even tumors.
# Children’s growing and developing bodies are more susceptible to the toxicity of artificial colorings
# Artificial food colorings are made from petroleum, acetone, and coal tar
# Artificial food colorings cannot only be found in junk food and candy, but they are even used to make things like salmon and oranges look more appealing

OK, I could probably go on and on with the list but, I think you get the point. The key is, we really want to avoid artificial colorings as much as we possible can. They are just not worth consuming.

So, now for egg decorating! Yes, you can dye your Easter eggs naturally!

1. Use a mug or large glass for each color you wish to make.
2. Place the colorant into each mug
* Brown: 2 teabags or several tablespoons of coffee grinds
* Red: several tablespoons of paprika
* Pink: piece of a beet or 2 berry teabags or mashed frozen raspberries or red fruit juice
* Purple: fill cup 1/3 with grape juice
* Yellow: several tablespoons of turmeric
* Orange: yellow onion skins
* Blue: red cabbage leaves or frozen blueberries (mash a bit in mug)
* Green: spinach (mash a bit in mug)
3. Add 1 teaspoon of white vinegar to each mug
4. Add ~ 1/2 cup of boiling water to each mug and mix
5. Dip eggs in solution. Remember, the longer the egg remains in the solution, the darker your colors will be.
6. Allow your eggs to dry.
7. If you wish for a shiny coating, you can rub with a little bit of olive or vegetable oil

Send me some pictures of your beautiful eggs!!

Baby Denied Health Coverage Due to Preexisting Condition
By Catherine Donaldson-Evans Mar 29th 2010 11:07AM

A Texas newborn who needed surgery to correct defective arteries was denied coverage by his parents’ insurance company on the grounds that the baby’s condition was preexisting.

Emboldened by the new federal health-care legislation that will make such claims illegal, Houston Tracy’s parents are fighting the decision by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, according to local reports.

“They kept saying it’s preexisting, it’s preexisting, but I don’t know how it can be preexisting on a baby that was just born,” the child’s father Doug Tracy told CBS affiliate KTVT. “If it’s mandated that everyone have health insurance, then how can one be denied?”

Blue Cross issued a statement to AOL Health Monday saying the company is addressing the Tracys concerns, but offered no details on how it was doing so.

“We understand what an emotional time this is for the Tracy family and we regret the frustration they are feeling,” the statement says. “Under privacy laws, we can’t discuss the specifics of any individual’s health care or coverage status with our company. What we can tell you is that we’ve responded to Mr. Tracy in writing over the weekend and are pleased to report that we’ve proposed a solution that addresses his and his family’s concerns.”

AOL Health was unable to reach the Tracys for comment.

The federal health-care legislation passed by Congress and signed by President Obama last week will stop insurance companies from being able to deny children coverage for preexisting conditions. But it doesn’t go into effect until September, meaning Houston came into the world just a little too early.

After the Tracys’ son was born on March 15, doctors found that he had a congenital heart disorder called transposition of the great arteries, according to media reports. Babies with the condition — which is almost never detected before birth — turn blue because the two major vessels that transport blood away from the heart are reversed.

Houston’s dad knew something was wrong right away.

“He wasn’t turning pink fast enough,” Tracy told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “When they listened to his chest, they realized he had an issue.”

But he was stunned when his insurance company wouldn’t pay for Houston’s operation, which the infant needed in order to survive.

“How can he have a preexisting condition if the baby didn’t exist until now?” the paper quoted Tracy as saying.

He and his wife Kim, who are small business owners, say they can’t afford coverage for themselves but pay for health insurance policies for their other two children.

IT’S A JOKE SON

From Teresa Ward’s Newsletter - TerersasFamilyCleaning.com

Women are like apples on trees. The best ones are at the top of the tree. Most men don’t want to reach for the good ones because they are afraid of falling and getting hurt. So, instead, they sometimes take the apples from the ground that aren’t as good, but easy to reach. The apples at the top think something is wrong with them, when in reality, they’re amazing. They just have to wait for the right man to come along, the one who is brave enough to climb all the way to the top of the tree.
Now Men…. Men are like a fine wine. They begin as grapes, and it’s up to women to stomp the heck out of them until they turn into something acceptable to have dinner with.

Natural Vitamin C Food Sources and Health Benefits

It’s vitally important that we do get plenty of natural vitamin C (with bioflavonoids) in our diets.

Besides protecting you from scurvy, which can kill you fast, vitamin C helps produce collagen. Collagen works like super-glue to keep all the cells in your body where they belong.

Plus, if you get wounded or break a bone, collagen comes to the rescue to help mend and heal.

The Best Natural Vitamin C Sources

Fortunately, C is abundant in most raw fruits and vegetables. We all know that a great vitamin C food source is citrus fruit. But there are many other sources on the fruits list including: lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruits, kiwifruit, papayas, cantaloupe, raspberries, watermelon, tomatoes, pineapples and strawberries.

Good natural vitamin C sources from the vegetables list include: spinach, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, pepers, celery, peas, romaine lettuce, carrots, mustard greens, turnip greens, collard greens, onions, corn, yams, sweet potatoes, chard, cabbage, parsley and asparagus.

Although fruits and vegetables are the best vitamin C food sources, some meats also contain small amounts. These include oysters and organ meats, such as liver, heart and tongue.

Even though vitamin C is naturally abundant in fruits and vegetables, it’s a delicate nutrient.

Broiling, grilling, frying, boiling and lengthy storage can all easily destroy the vitamin C in food. However, lightly steaming minimizes the loss. And since chilled and frozen fruits and vegetables retain their C, it’s best to keep all produce refrigerated or frozen until you’re ready to eat it.

Vitamin C Health Benefits

Vitamin C is so important in making collagen, that it’s an essential nutrient for healthy bones, tendons and ligaments. Other important vitamin C health benefits include the prevention of:

* Strokes,

* Diabetes,

* Blood clots,

* Heart disease,

* Atherosclerosis,

* Hair and tooth loss,

* High blood pressure,

* Joint pain and swelling,

* Various forms of cancer,

* High LDL (bad) cholesterol,

* And development of cataracts.

Vitamin C also contributes to a much stronger immune system. This helps to lower your susceptibility to colds, viruses, flu, infections and many other diseases.

Vitamin C Recommendations

The recommendations for vitamin C vary widely. For example, the National Academy of Sciences says the lowest minimum recommended daily allowances (RDA) for vitamin C should be: men 90 mgs, women 75 mgs and pregnant and lactating women up to 120 mgs. Whereas many other health authorities believe the Optimum Daily Allowance (ODA) should be 250 to as high as 3,000 mgs a day.

How do you know you’re getting enough C (ascorbic acid) from food and supplements?

The most common symptoms of a vitamin C deficiency include bleeding gums, nosebleeds, anemia, tendency to bruising, low resistance to infections and slow healing of wounds.
