US Airways Flight 1549 lands in the Hudson
On Jan. 15, US Airways Flight 1549 landed in the Hudson River six minutes after taking off from LaGuardia Airport because Canadian Geese struck both engines. All 155 passengers survived thanks to the heroic efforts of Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger III.

Octomom shocks the nation
On Jan. 26, Nadya Suleman, AKA Octomom, gave birth to the second full set of octuplets to be born alive in the U.S. Controversy sparked when the public discovered she was single, unemployed, already had six other children at home and conceived all her children via In vitro fertilisation.

Jaycee Lee Dugard appears 18 years later
At the age of 11, Jaycee Lee Dugard was abducted from a school bus stop. After being missing for 18 years, she appeared in the office of her alleged parole officer on Aug. 26. Phillip and Nancy Garrido, the husband-wife team who allegedly held Dugard captive in a backyard and forced her to have two kids, were arrested and charged with kidnapping and rape.

Balloon Boy hoax shocks the world
On Oct. 15, a Fort Collins family claimed that their six-year-old son, Falcon Heene, had floated away in a home-made balloon. As the world watched live coverage in horror, it was later announced that the boy was in the family’s attic the whole time. Read more on the family.

Gunman opens fire in Fort Hood, killing 13
On Nov. 5, a mass shooting took place at Fort Hood, a United States military post near Killeen, Texas. Nidal Malik Hasan, a U.S. Army major serving as a psychiatrist, killed 13 people and wounded 30 others.

Tiger Woods’ car accident opens floodgates to alleged string of affairs
On Nov. 27, Tiger Woods suffered minor injuries from a car crash near his home that was believed to be caused by a domestic dispute. This incident consequently opened the door to numerous alleged affairs that the pro golfer was having and various women began confessing their relationships with Woods. Despite the controversy the ensued, Woods was voted PGA Tour Player of the Year and AP’s Top Athlete of the Decade.
